Rostik, the Birthday Boy
Our good friends Ruslan/Zhanna and Shurik/Nastya threw a joint party for their Young Life babies who are both turning ONE this week! They invited us all up to the “platina”, an open spot next to the river/canal that brings water down to Almaty, for a big picnic. And what a picnic it was! Shurik grilled more than 15 kilos of pork steaks, plus chicken and lamb steaks as well! Wow - that was a lot of meat! We had a great time – relaxed visiting, games, water wars, the usual (!). . . Dan spent time hanging out with both Rostik and Lily, giving their parents a break. He is going to be such a great grandpa! (Not that we are in any hurry. . .)

I thought this was an interesting “old meets new” picture. The samovar is a traditional Russian tea pot, stoked with wood. Here Shurik was using the exhaust pipe from the samovar to roast his marshmallow. His head is turned away, unfortunately, hiding the Bluetooth piece in his ear. The new Kazakhstan!
Artom, Lily's cousin, was tired by the end of the evening and kept trying to walk home by himself!
